Nagma was born on 25 December 1974. She was born of a Hindu father and a Muslim mother and was named as Nandita Morarji. Nagma has acted in a wide range of languages of Indian movies like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi and Bhojpuri.
Life, family and other pursuits (1970 to present)
Sri Arvind Pratapsinh Morarji, Nagma’s biological father hailed from a royal family from Jaisalmer. They later migrated to Gujrat, Porbandar and then Mumbai. Sri Gokuldas Morarji, her great grandfather, was a reputed businessman in the shipping, textile, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. The Morarji family was renowned for their philanthropy, generosity and charity. They founded many prominent educational institutions and Dharamshalas which still exist in places like Pune.
Namga’s mother who hailed from the Konkan region of Maharastra, belonged to the Kazi freedom fighters family. Namga’s parents separated in 1973 citing some family problem.
Nagma remained closed to her biological father until his death in December 2005. It was her mother who encouraged her to join the film industry and would accompany her to the film sets for many years.
Taking a cue from her entrepreneurial background Nagma forayed into the clothing business by opening a boutique in Mumbai called “Nagma’s”. This was inaugurated in the year 200 by Akshay Kumar. The boutique was an instant hit, however, she had to shut it down in 2003. She had to be by her ailing father while simultaneously honouring her professional commitments for Bhojpuri films and films in other languages.
Belonging to a family of freedom fighters from her maternal side, she idolized Congress and later went to join the party as their star campaigner. She joined AICC(All India Congress Committee) as a member from Maharastra. She also went to adopt Christianity as her religion.
Acting career
Nagma made her acting debut opposite Salman Khan with the movie “Baaghi”. She went on to act in many hindi movies and also films in other Indian languages. Nagma acted in many Bhojpuri movies. She acted opposite the top Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan in many Bhojpuri movies with whom she was also linked romantically.
She won the Best Actress award at the Bhojpuri Cinema Awards in 2005 for her performance in the movie, “Dulha Milal Dildar”. In 2006, she acted in another Bhojpuri blockbuster, “Ganga” opposite Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini.
According to Nagma, she shifted to Bhojpuri cinema because she wanted to do films in different languages. Her first Bhojpuri film was ‘Panditji Bataayina Biyaah Kab Hoii’ which was a huge hit. After that offers poured in for her from Bhojpuri film industry and they were too good to be ignored. In her interview with The Hindu in April 2007, she indicated that another important reason for her to concentrate on Bhojpuri films was to give boost to her political career.
